Chapter Leader: Alexander Yang

Daily Logs + Monthly Analysis

Phillips Academy's Foodnomics chapter, led by Alexander Yang, represents one of our largest-scale implementations with some of the highest initial waste volumes. Despite the challenging baseline numbers, Alexander has demonstrated exceptional leadership in achieving meaningful reductions across both lunch and dinner services.

Starting with significant food waste levels—lunch averaging $648.55 and dinner averaging $666.20 in September—Phillips Academy faced the complex challenge of addressing waste patterns at a large institutional scale. Alexander's systematic approach and persistent advocacy have yielded impressive results.

Key achievements at Phillips Academy include:

  1. Substantial lunch improvements: 32.2% reduction from September ($648.55) to May ($439.85)
  2. Consistent dinner progress: 27.9% reduction from September ($666.20) to May ($480.25)
  3. Large-scale impact: Combined monthly savings of over $350 in reduced food waste
  4. Institutional change: Successfully influenced dining policies at a major preparatory school
  5. Sustained momentum: Achieved reductions in 8 out of 9 months tracked

Alexander Yang's work at Phillips Academy demonstrates that even institutions with high baseline waste can achieve significant improvements through dedicated student leadership and consistent application of the Foodnomics methodology. His efforts prove that large-scale change is possible when students take ownership of environmental challenges within their communities.
